Entrance Evaluation

The National Qualifying Examination Process required for registration with the Canadian College of Professional Counselling Practitioners measures the applicant’s ability to conform to the usual and customary competency standards in the practice of mental health services.

The CCPCP Qualifying Process measures competency standards in four ways:

Part 1
Supervisor Evaluation – A signed evaluation prepared by a professional colleague, supervisor, or member of the CCPCP Board of Directors who can attest to the applicant’s competency in the practice of professional mental health services as demonstrated in the areas of practice identified in the Competency Profile. The 8 areas of core competence can be found below. 

Part 2
A series of multiple choice questions measuring the applicants ability to apply ethical guidelines to professional practice.

Part 3
Short answer questions to evaluate the applicant’s proficiency in the use of informed consent, establishing a therapeutic orientation, recognition of scope of practice; and ability to assess and manage risk of suicide, violence, homicide, and abuse.

Part 4
Documentation of education and training – applicants will provide a list of courses and professional development credits completed in the areas of competence described below.

Eight Areas of Core Competence

An evaluation form, to be prepared and signed by a professional colleague or supervisor, will rate the applicant’s abilities in each of the eight areas competency.

  1. The ability to demonstrate working knowledge of major mental health theories and related techniques to include Person Centered, Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral models, Gestalt, Existential, Loss and Grief, Developmental, Couples and Family Systems.
  2. Ability to conduct a thorough Clinical Assessment, evaluate crisis risk level and use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to determine scope of practice and make appropriate referrals.
  3. Ability to develop and maintain a Therapeutic Relationship, set goals, assess for progress, determine outcome measures, and initiate effective closure of the mental health process.
  4. Ability to employ effective Mental Health Interventions based on client’s presenting concerns, and goals.
  5. Ability to manage cases within the framework of generally accepted standards of care as applied to the environment in which the applicant practices.
  6. Commitment to Professional Practice as demonstrated by fee setting, accountability to clients, operating within one’s scope of practice, and adherence to the ethical guidelines set out by the professional association of which the applicant is a member.
  7. Ability to demonstrate appropriate risk assessment procedures and interventions for the resolutions of Crisis, Suicide, Conflict, and Emergency situations.
  8. Ability to demonstrate Wellness Practices through a commitment to ongoing personal growth and professional development.
